Short answer: The AI is exactly the same. Launchpad installs Anthropic’s official Claude Code and does not modify it. What it changes is getting set up in the first place, and what happens during a long session. If you are a developer who is comfortable installing things and living in a terminal, you may not need it, and we would rather say so than sell you something.

Same engine. The difference is before and during.

On its own, Claude Code is excellent and completely free to install, and if you are happy setting it up and starting it from a terminal, that is a perfectly good way to work. The launcher exists for the two moments that go badly otherwise. Before: getting it running means installing several pieces yourself and getting them to find each other, which is where most non-developers give up. During: a long session gives you no warning before you hit a limit, no way to know it is waiting for you if the window is behind something else, and no way to carry on if the limit lands overnight.

I am a developer. Do I need this?

Honestly, probably not for the install, you can do that in a few minutes. The parts that might still earn their place are carrying on after the 5 hour limit and being told out loud when it wants you. If neither appeals, use Claude Code on its own.

Does it change Claude Code in any way?

No. It installs and runs Anthropic’s official version, unmodified. Everything you know still works, and you can stop using the launcher without touching your setup.

What if I already have Claude Code installed?

It checks what is already there and leaves it alone rather than installing a second copy.
